Paint Application Intro

Why Proper Application Matters

Our paints are formulated with high-quality pigments and binders for superior adhesion, coverage, and longevity. However, achieving the best results requires careful preparation, precise application, and proper aftercare. Follow these guidelines to ensure a flawless finish that enhances the beauty and protection of your surfaces.

Painting Wood Surfaces

Before Painting

  • Clean the wood thoroughly to remove dirt, grease, and old finishes using a mild soap solution or wood cleaner.
  • Sand the surface with medium-grit sandpaper (120-150 grit) to smooth imperfections and promote adhesion. Always sand in the direction of the wood grain.
  • Apply a primer if the wood is raw or porous to seal it and prevent uneven absorption. Use our wood-specific primer for best results.
  • Ensure the area is dust-free and well-ventilated. Work in temperatures between 50-85°F (10-29°C) with low humidity.

During Application

  • Stir the paint well but avoid shaking to prevent bubbles. Use a high-quality brush, roller, or sprayer suited for wood.
  • Apply thin, even coats, starting from the top and working down. For brushes, use long strokes along the grain.
  • Allow each coat to dry as per the label instructions (typically 2-4 hours). Lightly sand between coats with fine-grit paper (220 grit) for smoothness.
  • Aim for 2-3 coats for optimal coverage and durability. Watch for drips and smooth them immediately.

After Painting

  • Let the final coat cure fully (up to 7 days) before heavy use to avoid scratches or marks.
  • Clean tools immediately with water (for water-based paints) or appropriate solvent.
  • Maintain the surface by dusting regularly and wiping with a damp cloth. Avoid harsh chemicals.
  • For outdoor wood, apply a UV-protectant topcoat if exposed to sunlight to prevent fading.

Painting Wall Surfaces

Before Painting

  • Repair any cracks, holes, or dents with spackle or filler, then sand smooth.
  • Clean walls with TSP (trisodium phosphate) or a mild detergent to remove grease and dust.
  • Apply a primer, especially on new drywall or over dark colors, to ensure even coverage.
  • Protect floors and furniture with drop cloths, and tape off edges with painter's tape.

During Application

  • Use a roller for large areas and a brush for edges. Load the roller evenly to avoid drips.
  • Paint in 'W' or 'M' patterns for uniform coverage, then roll straight up and down.
  • Work in sections, keeping a wet edge to prevent lap marks. Apply 2 coats for best results.
  • Ventilate the room and wear a mask if needed, especially with low-VOC paints.

After Painting

  • Allow 24-48 hours drying time before touching or hanging items.
  • Remove tape slowly at a 45-degree angle while paint is still slightly wet.
  • Clean walls with mild soap and water as needed; our paints are washable and resistant to stains.
  • Store leftover paint in a cool, dry place for touch-ups.

Painting Floor Surfaces

Before Painting

  • Sweep and mop the floor to remove debris; use a degreaser for oily residues.
  • Etch concrete floors with acid solution if necessary, or sand wooden floors.
  • Fill cracks and level uneven areas. Apply a floor primer for better adhesion.
  • Ensure the space is well-ventilated and free from foot traffic during the process.

During Application

  • Use a roller with an extension pole for even application; cut in edges with a brush.
  • Apply in thin layers, allowing drying time between coats (4-6 hours).
  • For epoxy or specialty floor paints, mix components as instructed and work quickly.
  • Avoid bubbles by rolling back over wet paint lightly.

After Painting

  • Cure for 3-7 days before walking or placing furniture; use fans to speed drying.
  • Seal with a clear topcoat for added durability against wear and tear.
  • Clean with gentle, non-abrasive cleaners to maintain the finish.
  • Inspect periodically for chips and touch up as needed.

Painting Roof Surfaces

Before Painting

  • Inspect and repair any roof damage, such as loose shingles, rust spots, or cracks.
  • Thoroughly clean the roof with a pressure washer to remove dirt, moss, algae, and loose paint.
  • Allow the roof to dry completely before applying any coating.
  • Apply a suitable primer, especially on metal, tile, or previously unpainted surfaces.

During Application

  • Choose a cool, dry day for painting to prevent the paint from drying too fast or blistering.
  • Use a roller or sprayer for even coverage; back-brush where needed for full adhesion.
  • Apply paint in thin, even coats, starting from the top and working downward.
  • Follow manufacturer guidelines for drying time between coats (usually 4–6 hours).

After Painting

  • Allow the roof paint to fully cure (typically 24–48 hours) before any exposure to rain or foot traffic.
  • Inspect the surface for missed spots and touch up as necessary.
  • Clean tools with water (for water-based) or solvent (for oil-based) immediately after use.
  • Check the roof annually and recoat every 5–7 years for optimal protection.
